Congratulations, you have chosen to take an exciting adventure into the world of health care. Due to an aging population, technological advances, and constantly changing government mandates, professions in health care are evolving beyond traditional health care systems. For example, future health care workers will be expected to not only know basic computer skills but also be required to understand how to take a patient’s temperature via telemedicine. Employees will also be required to provide personal patient care and the continuing education needed to work in a globally connected community. Successful completion of this program by independent learners will be based on theories and hands-on learning in medical science.
All academic criteria from language arts, sciences, and social studies are incorporated throughout these modules. It is the responsibility of the student to combine his/her existing knowledge with the information garnered from the course. This course is designed for advanced middle school students to high school students who are interested in a future in health care. Your instructor (parent) should be able to adapt the course to suit the student. However, assistance is available during the course. There will be one day a week provided by the facilitator of this course for parents to take advantage of either speaking on the phone, or communicating via video conferencing or video chatting with the instructor to ascertain the skills needed to teach their students. There will be an additional charge for this service.
There are 8 modules to complete within the workbook. Medical Science 101 is approximately 135 seat hours, which will take 7.5 hours per week to complete this class in 18 weeks. However, the student and instructor will determine the pace of the class. Students are to do all of the assignments and quizzes. The instructor (parent) will determine competency in each skill. The Medical Science 102 course will be available upon successful completion of this class.
All modules will include medical terminology along with current trends in science and medicine within the module. Medical terminology plays a basic role in health care. To comprehend the instructional and application materials, students must have an understanding of medical terminology. It is also important to expose students to topical news items that affect our society nationally and globally. Current trends in health care will be on our website and will be updated weekly. HOSA – future health care professionals is an international health care organization for students interested in health care science or medicine. More information can be obtained on our website, esquaredhomeschool.com. A complete module of HOSA will be included in the next course, Medical Science 102.
